TINKER TAILOR SOLDIER SPY (Dec 9, 2011)

Starring:  Gary Oldman, Colin Firth, and Tom Hardy
Director: Tomas Alfredson
Rated: R  -  Runtime: 127 min
Genre:  Thriller
Opening as a limited release on Dec 9th, we have been graced by the opening here in the  Phoenix area this week.  What took so long?  Read on....
If you have read my postings you have noticed that I am not a big fan of timeframe hopping in a movie unless the writer and director have done their job.  Most of the time we will find that jumping around in time is really confusing.  This movie is one of those!
The first 20 minutes of the movie are about as confusing as they could have possibly made it.  One has no idea where the film is going, jumping back and forth from present to past so many times without a sense of direction.  I kept asking myself when are they going to tie together the events that have taken place?  During that first 20 minutes I saw 8 people leave the theater and not return.  Too bad they didn’t come back because from the 30 minute point in the film it all came together and the film began to make sense.
Bottom line - it was an OK spy movie (good guy, bad guy, who done it film).  I enjoyed the acting in the movie as it makes one believe the story, and that’s what it’s all about right?  This is not one that I will go see a second time, but worth the time to sit through once.
My Rating: 2 1/2 Mugs of Guinness - aka; 2 1/2 Stars for those not enjoying the better life with Irish Ale.

THE DEVIL INSIDE (Jan 6, 2012)

Starring:  Fernanda Andrade, Simon Quarterman, and Evan Helmuth
Director:  William Brent Bell
Rated: R  -  Runtime:  87 min
Genre:  Horror | Thriller
The movie buzz is that this movie is suppose to mimic Paranormal Activity - but after seeing it and making my comparison I have to say it's more realistic than Paranormal Activity.
I can tell you this film is one that will keep the screaming coming with nearly every event.  I don't know if I would have enjoyed the film as much if it were not for the humor of screeches and screams emanating from every corner of the theater.  It had some pretty gruesome scenes as expected.  But with the limited budget I am not quite sure how they got the woman having the exorcism to get in those contorted positions - Ouch!
FYI:  This was a low budget movie that was acquired by Paramount Pictures for $1 million and quickly turning around an estimated $34.5 million on the opening weekend.  Also moving "Mission Impossible - Ghost Protocol" to the #2 position.  Pretty fair return on your money aye?  I'm in the wrong business!!!!!
