TED (Jun 29, 2012)

Starring:  Mark Wahlberg, Mila Kunis, and Seth MacFarlane
Director:  Seth MacFarlane
Rated:  R - Runtime:  106 minutes
Genre:  Comedy | Fantasy
This is gonna be short and sweet!  I thought the movie was great!  From start to finish the storyline keeps you interested and laughing.  If you don’t walk away from this one with a huge smile on your face you need to go out buy a Teddy Bear, and wish every night that he will come to life, don’t wait do it right away!  You’re gonna love this little guy and the antics that he gets into during the film.  That’s a promise from the good hands person at your local Teddybear store!!!!  So many great one liners in the movie as well, “regardless of how famous you are, whether you’re ......, eventually nobody give a shit”
My Rating: 4 Mugs of Guinness - aka; 4 Stars for those being too young to enjoy the Irish Ale.

MADEA’S WITNESS PROTECTION (Jun 29, 2012)

Starring:  Tyler Perry, Eugene Levy, and Denise Richards
Director:  Tyler Perry
Rated:  PG-13 - Runtime:  114 minutes
Genre:  Comedy
Not sure how many more of the Madea movies Tyler Perry is going to be able to make before it wears thin.  The actors/actresses in the movie leave something to be desired, it just simply put didn’t make me say Wow, this movie has really outdone the others in the same format.  Basically put, it’s the same old stuff just put in a different atmosphere!!  You know what to expect before entering the theater, so if your up to it go see it but don’t be disappointed when you walk away with that same feeling.

Starring:  Channing Tatum, Alex Pettyfer, Olivia Munn, and Matthew McConaughey
Director:  Steven Soderbergh
Rated:  R - Runtime:  110 minutes
Genre:  Comedy | Drama
Ok ladies, you will love this one!  I have spoken to several women leaving the movie theater after the showing and all I got from each of them were screams and howls as if they had just left the real thing.  For the guys out there, you might want to think about taking your girl to see the movie, but don’t expect to walk away from it with the same reaction that your girlfriend or wife has.  As unfortunate as it may be,  I have to rate this as I saw it....  Sorry ladies
From my viewing I have to say the movie didn’t do that much for me but here again this is from a guys point of view.  I think the movie had a lacking of a great story line and a crumby ending so.... Not more than middle of the road!

YOUR SISTER’S SISTER (Released in Ireland, Jun 29, 2012)

Starring:  Mark Duplass, Emily Blunt, and Rosemarie DeWitt
Director:  Lynn Shelton
Rated:  R - Runtime:  90 minutes
Genre:  Comedy | Drama
This film is a sleeper for sure.  Being released at film festivals around the world from Sep, 2011 thru Jul, 2012 and really not to much mention of it anywhere.
I took the time to see this and wasn’t disappointed whatsoever!  In short it begins with a group of people gathering together to toast the 1 year anniversary of the death of Jack’s (Mark Duplass) brother Tom.  From there it proceeds to Iris (Emily Blunt), Tom’s ex-girlfriend offering Jack a place to go and clear his head of his brothers death.  Jack finds Iris’s sister Hanna (Rosemarie DeWitt) at the family cabin where no one was suppose to be, and a drunken encounter with her leads to a story that is one that you will like.  It should have had better promoting, having great storyline and an excellent ending!!

Director:  Timur Bekmambetov
Rated:  R - Runtime:  105 minutes
Genre:  Action | Fantasy | Horror
For those of you who have read the book, I am told by one reader that the story doesn’t follow the book to the word.  But for those of you who really don’t give a damn whether a movie does what movies do best which is bringing a good story to the silver screen then this one is for you!  I thought the movie has a great story line, the acting was superb and there are no down times throughout the movie.  This is what I go to the movies to see!  Personally I don’t give a (bleep) if a film follows the book precisely as it is the movie makers that take books and cut scenes to make the movie one that can keep the attention of the movie goers (you and me)!  Kudos to the film makers for doing just that in this film!!
You will find the film enjoyable from start to end, so my suggestion is go see it for yourself and please come back and let us know what you thought.  I am certain that you will agree with me on this one!

BRAVE (Jun 22, 2012)

Starring:  Kelly Macdonald, Billy Connolly, and Emma Thompson
Directors:  Mark Andrews, and Brenda Chapman
Rated:  PG - Runtime:  93 minutes
Genre:  Animation | Action | Adventure
Ladies and Gents this film will absolutely surprise you, it has bits and pieces of some great humor laced throughout the film, it has a great story line reaching deep into the hearts of all Mums and Dads.  This is a film animated so well and brings to the big screen in my estimation the best film that Pixar Animation has done to date.  It’s not only a film for the youth but you adults as well!  So get off your butt’s and take the kids to see this one!
Just a little about the voices you hear in the movie, Kelly Macdonald is the voice of Merida (you will love her), Billy Connolly, the voice of Fergus, the king and father of Merida (you will love the humorous content of his part in the film), and of course Emma Thompson the voice of the Queen and mother of Merida, her part is the serious “Mum” but as the story progresses you will see how her part changes and in actuality it is quite humorous!
So, in closing I simply put this out for all even slightly interested... ‘DON’T MISS THIS ONE’ it is one that you will want to have and keep in your library of DVD’s when it reaches the stores

ROCK OF AGES (Jun 15, 2012)

Starring:  Julianne Hough, Diego Boneta, and Tom Cruise
Director:  Adam Shankman
Rating: PG-13 - Runtime:  123 minutes
Genre:  Comedy | Drama | Musical
Stacey Jaxx is played by Cruise and unfortunate as it may be I think this film is one that Cruise may look back at and ask why the hell did I take this part?  Being the drunkard rock star that he is portraying his part in this movie is oh so much less than what we have come to expect from him.  Overall, I thought the movie has a poorly written storyline, but I guess you can’t expect too much from a musical...... Or can you?
The bright spot in the film is the music, some great old tunes brought to life and done quite nicely but here again it just doesn’t make the movie one to remember!  If I were you and had the choice of the two movies that were released this past week I would pick this one as you will see or have already seen in my review of “That’s My Boy”.

Starring:  Adam Sandler, Andy Samberg, Leighton Meester, and Susan Sarandon
Director:  Sean Anders
Rating:  R - Runtime:  114 minutes
Genre:  Comedy
Oh my god, can a movie have any more “F-bombs” and screaming than this one?  Please tell me this is not what to expect from Sandler in the future because it sucked.  I have spoken to others who have seen it and some have said they loved it, yet others thought the same as what I have written.  Am I getting old and don’t appreciate his humor?  I don’t think this is the case but I’ll let you make up your mind on it.  Personally I think the movie was written for one level of intelligence (minimal at best).  If asked if I would suggest spending the time and money to see this film my answer is a firm NO, Hell NO.
However if it’s a screaming idiot you are looking for in a film then this is the one for you to venture out to see!!

Starring:  Noomi Rapace, Logan Marshall-Green, and Michael Fassbender
Director:  Ridley Scott
Rating:  R  - Runtime:  124 minutes
Genre:  Adventure | Sci-Fi | Thriller
Great special effects, ok acting, and a good storyline would be about all I have to say about this film.  All the hype that was given to this film leaves you at a loss when you leave the theater.  Almost every great film has once again been given to you in the trailers, leaving very little to the imagination or finding a special twist in the film all the way up to the final scenes.  There you will find the only twist that may leave you with a question.
If you are a Sci-Fi movie nut you will like the action that takes place, but like me I think you will find that even there the director didn’t take the time to get the shots that could have added greatly to the film.  I know you will like the scene where the robot gets his head torn off and still communicates to the crew.  That’s awesome, kinda like having the head of a deer mounted above your fireplace who will talk to you (ok, kidding but think about it).

Director:  Dean Wright
Rating: R - Runtime:  145 minutes
Genre:  Drama | History | War
I didn’t hear much of anything about this film prior to it coming out here in the east valley but after sitting through it I completely enjoyed the film, the acting was great as well as having a great storyline.  Be it true to how it really happened I can’t say but the way they presented it was exciting as well as managing to keep the attention of all the viewers.
Bottom line, you won’t be waisting your time or money cause it is well worth the short time out of your busy schedule to spend the time.  Let me know if you don’t agree, or for that matter let me know if you do agree as well.... Oh heck love to hear from all of yah no matter what!!

SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN (Jun 1, 2012)

Starring:  Kristen Stewart, Chris Hemsworth, Charlize Theron, and Sam Clafin
Director:  Rupert Sanders
Rated:  PG-13 - Runtime:  127 minutes
Genre:  Action | Adventure | Drama | Fantasy
I saw this movie and all I could think of that it was named incorrectly, all that came to mind was it should have been called Bella and the Huntsman.  She has made her place in history and should stay there!  Why is it that when ever she is in a film she is resurrected from the dead?  Perhaps she should just play the part of an immortal in every film, this way there is no death, simply life for eternity.  What the heck it’s gonna happen anyway so why not start it that way?  OK enough for my grandstanding.
The theatrics were not the greatest, but the acting on everyone else’s part was great along with the special effects (those I thought were great), loved the part of the mirror mirror on the wall!  What woman wouldn’t want a talking mirror to tell her when she was lookin great?  Especially one that poured down off the wall and stood up in front of her?  (a brand new twist to the mirror on the wall).  Now for the evil stepmother, let me tell you now, if that is what Theron is going to look like when she grows old, there is no guy that will want to be with her when she reaches the latter years.  But we all know with plastic surgery that ain’t gonna happen to that lovely!
Go see it, report back!

Starring:  Will Smith, Tommy Lee Jones, Josh Brolin, and Jemaine Clement
Director:  Barry Sonnenfeld
Rated:  PG-13 - Runtime:  106 minutes
Genre:  Action | Comedy | Sci-Fi
This one took it’s time to be released but finally we get the whole picture of where and when Agent “J” (Will Smith) came about.  I certain you will like the film in its entirety as it brings to the screen a great portrayal of the young Agent “K” played by Josh Brolin.  If you didn’t know, the voice was not a dub in but Brolin did it himself.  Amazing how remarkably alike the two are.  As always Smith plays the part so well, but hey, what do you expect?  If you haven’t already seen this don’t miss it, and if it’s already gone in your location, it’s well worth making it a part of your dvd/blu-ray collection.

Starring:  Judi Dench, Bill Nighy, Maggie Smith, and Tom Wilkinson
Director:  John Madden
Rated:  PG-13 - Runtime: 124 minutes
Genre:  Comedy | Drama
Now this is a movie that was really a sleeper, if you haven’t seen it and you have the chance to do so, don’t miss it!  It has a story line that is light hearted with a lot of humor laced throughout the film.  I know you will like it simply because it is something that could really happen and sometimes you even dream about some kind of an adventure like this.  Here are a group of elderly people not able to continue with the lifestyle that they had taking off for a new way of life in a completely unfamiliar surrounding.  When I say unfamiliar, I really mean unfamiliar, moving from the UK to a remote village in India and none of them speak the native language, or at least they can’t understand the broken english that is spoken by the people in India.
In the end the story has a terrific ending one that you really can’t see coming but nonetheless they find themselves at home with the people and the Best Exotic Marigold Hotel and move forward with their lives.

BERNIE (May 4, 2012)

Starring:  Jack Black, Shirley MacLaine, and Matthew McConaughey
Director:  Richard Linklater
Rating: PG-13 - Runtime:  104 minutes
Comedy | Crime | Drama
Kinda slow and really not a part you would expect Jack Black to be playing.  As a matter of fact, I can’t remember the last film I saw him in that he wasn’t a total goof off.  His part in this film be it true or not was done in a manner that it leaves you with the “I feel sorry for this poor guy” even though he brutally shot and killed an elderly woman in her own garage then stuffed her in her own freezer.  Oh yah, that’s the kinda guy I would want as my good friend or in this case her man slave.
I’m not sure how your gonna react to this but I think justice was done regardless of what a sweetheart of a guy he was or had pretended to be.
Was the acting good?  Ah, not really, but the story line was great and it could have been a great mystery story if written a bit differently.  Oh well you can’t have everything all the time.

Director:  Peter Berg
Rated: PG-13  -  Runtime:  131 min
Genre:  Action | Sci-Fi | Thriller
If it’s non stop action laced with humor this is the movie for you!!  This one was well worth the midnight showing, the acting was great, it has a good story line, and we have finally seen an alien that has some resemblance to a human.  I was wondering how long this would take before it happened.  Dammit anyway, we can’t possibly be the only form of living being that looks somewhat like another.
Loved the part Rihanna played, a cute female sailor, let’s see the last time we saw anything like this was in A Few Good Men.  It has become almost a contradiction in terms.
As for the awesome video graphics and animation, wow, that was great!  I’m definitely gonna go see this one again.
Side note:  If you live in an area where you can see this on the big screen (IMAX format) don't miss going to see it there!! And for any of my readers living in the Mesa, AZ area you can see it at the Dickinson Gateway 12 IMAX.

I really expected more with all the stars in this movie!  The storyline was not that good, but they used all the good parts in the trailers which drove the hype up and that’s why it is even making money at the box office.  It seems that the only one in the movie who managed to maintain any kind of respectability and dignity was J-Lo.

Rated: R  -  Runtime:  83 min
Genre:  Comedy
Well folks, I have just a real short write up on my thoughts of this movie.  In short, it wasn’t as bad as Bruno but damn close.  The funny parts, or attempts at being funny were far and few between.  Basically boring, really made no sense and the part that Anna Faris plays is a far cry from her capabilities.  Bottom line, don’t waste your time or money, but if you’re bound and determined to go out and see it you better make it a priority as I can’t see this movie being around much longer than a week.

DARK SHADOWS (May 11, 2012)

Starring:  Johnny Depp, Michelle Pfeiffer, Eva Green, and Helena Bonham Carter
Director:  Tim Burton
Rated: PG-13  -  Runtime:  113 min
Genre:  Comedy | Fantasy
What else does one need to see other than “Johnny Depp” to know that this is going to be a great movie.  You only need to sit through a couple minutes of this film to know that you are in for another treat from Depp.  He brings to the screen his diversity in his acting skills, as he has portrayed everything from the elusive Captain Jack Sparrow (Pirates of the Caribbean), Sweeney Todd (The Demon Barber of Fleet Street), Frank Tupelo (The Tourist), John Dillinger (Public Enemies), Kemp (The Rum Diary), to the Mad Hatter in Alice of Wonderland and in each he has given in my estimation an excellent acting job.
The team of Burton and Depp have put together a fantastic movie, you will love the character Depp becomes, guaranteed!
In this film he portrays Barnabas Collins who in his younger days grew up in a family having come from Liverpool, England to make a new home in the Maine establishing one of the richest fishing towns around those parts.  As the story progresses his life becomes overtaken by a witch because he fell in love with another and would have nothing to do with her.  She cast a spell on him making him a vampire and had the town people believing he was a monster and was buried alive.
The rest of this short synopsis if I were to continue would give the entire plot away, so, as usual I am going to leave you with this.
Drop whatever you’re doing and get yourself out and see this movie, it’s a MUST GO in my book.

GIRL IN PROGRESS (May 11, 2012)

Starring:  Eva Mendes, Cierra Ramirez, and Patricia Arquette
Director:  Patricia Riggen
Rated: PG-13  -  Runtime:  90 min
Genre:  Comedy | Drama
Eva Mendes (Grace) does a good job in this film, but her performance is dwarfed by that of Cierra Ramirez (Ansiedad) her daughter in the film.  It is a great story line and is accented nicely by the youthful Ramirez.  Even so, Grace is on a journey of her own and having the two lives of daughter and mother each going in different directions the director brought them together in the end leaving the audience with the feeling that even today things can work out if only given the chance and the right interventions.  Patricia Arquette plays the part of Ansiedad’s teacher who in her teachings has introduced the young girl to the phrase “Rights of Passage” and from their the story takes off and Wow, you guys will love it.
I don’t need to say more as you will find the comedy laced throughout the film along with the drama a movie that will keep you entertained from start to finish.

Rated: PG  -  Runtime:  95 min
Genre:  Action | Thriller | Sci-Fi
This brings me up to date, thanks for sticking with me as I get all these movies in after having a great Hawaiian Cruise - ‘Mahalo’
First off, this is not a remake of the 2006 Lockout, completely different story, same name.... Hmmm, they must be running out of new names aye?  I do have to say this before going on “thank god I didn’t have to sit through another crappy movie”.  There, I got that off my chest and can move on.  As for this movie, I thought it had a ok plot, nothing that I’m gonna write mom about, but ok.
I did however enjoy the bantering between Guy Pearce (Snow) and Maggie Grace (Emilie Warnock), they work well together in this sort of genre.  Overall it was very amusing especially with Joseph Gilgun (Hydell) this guy is either actually a “Certifiable CRAZY” or he is one hell of a good actor for his portrayal of this out of his mind crazy person who has been released into the population of this outer space prison to dish out death at his whimsical desire.
The film managed to keep the attention of those in the theater, but as you can imagine, by now the number of viewers have dwindled.  If you haven’t seen it, and this is your kind of flick, and you can find it still playing I think you will like it.  On the other hand, if you don’t like violence and mayhem stay the heck away.
My Rating: 2 1/2 Mugs of Guinness - aka; 2 1/2 Stars for those being too young to enjoy the Irish Ale.

CHIMPANZEE (Apr 20, 2012)

Starring/Narrated by:  Tim Allen
Directors:  Alastair Fothergill, and Mark Linfield
Rated: PG  -  Runtime:  78 min
Genre:  Documentary
Great filming, great story, but who the heck made the decision to give the narration to Tim Allen?  I was really disappointed in the overall delivery of the film and narration.  I was truly looking forward to seeing this movie, and now that I have I would say someone somewhere screwed up, in my estimation this could have been a tremendous film and story.
I am quite certain not all of you will agree with me, so instead of taking my word for it take the kids and see the movie, you will enjoy at least the baseline story behind it.  Not very often will you find in the wild any Alfa Male of any species do what is shown in this film.  For that alone it is worth seeing.
Try as I can I just can’t understand why this wasn’t given to a good narrator.  Hey now, I’m a Tim Allen fan, but his forte is humor and onscreen delivery between humans. Ok, I’m gonna back up and say this, Allen may have been given a script to read and he did just that, it just didn’t work!   Sorry Tim!
